Topo USA/Earthmate PN-20 Map Exchange Overview
DeLorme has pre-cut U.S. multi-state regions within the included Topo USA software. This allows you to update the world base map on the GPS with more detailed routable U.S. highway and major roads for your region(s) of interest. This design maximizes user-available, on-device internal memory for even more detailed topographic maps and imagery you cut from Topo USA of your precise areas of interest. The Eastern 1(A) multi-state region, as an example, requires 12 MB, with a total of 75 MB available on the device. These precut regions are located in the left window of the Handheld Exchange dialog, which is also where your map packages, waypoints, and tracks will be stored once created. (Note: you can store up to 2 GB of data on an SD card. The SD card slot is located within the battery compartment, beneath the batteries.)

The PN-20--Topo USA 8.0 System comes with:

    Summary:
Slow screen update and poor accuracy
    Comment:
I was very excited about this GPS; with its long list of features, included software, and low price, it seemed like a no-brainer as the economy hiking GPS of choice. Unfortunately, what could be a great product is hampered by two problems:

Poor Accuracy: This GPS takes a LONG time (on the order of a minute or two) to obtain a satellite lock, and the smallest margin of error it gave me was 36 feet. My similarly priced Garmin Edge bike computer (which clearly doesn't have any larger an antenna) obtains a lock in 15 seconds or less and is usually accurate to 10 to 14 feet.

Slow Screen Update: The screen re-draws VERY slowly. In my opinion, the screen updates too slowly to make the color display and numerous display features worth it.

The included mapping software is nice, although the online map/imagery purchasing is a little awkward.

Great tool - limited on ram though
    Comment:
It's not like I NEED 8 GB of RAM, but I bought it to replace the 2 GB card in order to post a lot more maps. Bad luck for me, it doesn't like the "new" higher GB cards. Oh well, it's still an awesome tool and plenty rugged. The graphics are easy to read and understand with the precision pretty good, even for Alaska.

       Buyer Beware
    Comment:
The seller of this unit did not clearly state that it was a refurbished piece. I will never again buy from this seller

    Summary:
Does everything I wanted it to do.
    Comment:
       Purchased on 05/04/2009
I've had this unit now for several months. I needed something I could load topo maps in for off road motorcycle riding and hiking.
    Pros:
    - Usually links up and gets 3-D fix in about 20-30 seconds.
    - Battery life seems pretty good with about five hours on a set of NiMh rechargeble AA's.
    - User interface is laid out well. I can press buttons with gloves on.
    - It does exactly what I needed to do, which is guide me over mountains on back roads.
    - Mine came with Topo 7 software. Although 'clunkier' than using Google maps or MS Streets, it still does exactly what I needed. Makes it easy to map my route on the PC and then send it to the PN-20.
    - Is definitely waterproof and shock resistant. Definitely.

    Cons:
    - Screen is a little small. Font size for text/menus is small. I need my glasses to read.
    - Not the best for street mapping/routing on the fly (without the PC software). If your looking for a GPS unit to use mostly for street navigation, then keep on looking. This is not the droid you are looking for.
    - does not play MP3s, WMAs, or other music files. Does not play videos. Will not take/make phone calls. Does not make my coffee in the morning. Does not shoot out laser-beams to destroy my enemys.

Overall if you want a tough little GPS that can guide you over back roads (mine is usually on a RAM mount on my off-road motorcycle) then this might be the ticket for you.

A Greate Value for the Buck
    Comment:
This device is 10x better than my old Magellan Explorist 200. More features, MUCH more intuitive than the 200, and really picks up the satellites well. They did nice job in creating a straight forward interface for the GPS. The fact that high quality topo and street maps are included makes this unit a great value for the dollar. I use it for geocaching, mark way points, and to track my mountain bike rides. If you like to geocache then you will love the fact that you can download cache coordinates directly to the GPS from the main geocache web site. I think you can only do this with Delorme and Garmin. I'm still playing with the mapping software on the PC. This software is not as intuitive as the GPS device. (Just say NO to Magellan--Just awful).

No compliants considering the price and how I use it.
