Great Content - Superb Photos - Poor binding

Comment:
This book would be super for a novice tier with some basic experience. However, like another reviewer here, the book was damaged on reciept. The pages were seperating from the binding as the reviewer reported. I own Essential Trout Flies, an abridged version of the hardback, and love it.
However, I reluctantly returned the expanded, hardback version. I hope they do a reprint with better manufacturing q.c.

Somewhat disappointing

Comment:
I have been a fly tier and flyfishing book collector for over 30 yrs. I own many books on tying instruction. I rate this one as mediocre at best. I suppose if you do not have any other book to compare, this one appears to be all you need. I felt the author was promoting his patterns and techniques over the tried and true standards of the industry. It has a severe Western US bias. The flies are not well known and have doubtful usefulness outside the Rockies. I also own Ted Leeson's book,"Benchside Reference..." I find it much superior in technique, photos and written instruction as well as using a more familiar base of fly patterns for the tier. It has a format I find more useful. It breaks up the different techniques for each part of the fly and all the variations that can be used. Pay the extra bucks and get Leeson's book. You'll be much happier.

Broken Spline

Comment:
Received this book earlier then expected, but it had a broken spline. I am confused since I purchased a NEW book, not a used book. Splines do not break unless someone opens the book and presses down on the binding. This book clearly was not new!
Peaked inside of the book and appears well illustrated. Can't wait for the replacement. If they screw the replacement up, I'll pay extra and pick the book up at a local book store. They have already eaten up enough of my time returning the book to the post office to outweigh any discount price. Now I have to wait for transit both ways and the time for someone to review the merchandise. ARGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!
On the plus side, they did pay for shipment of the return (AS THEY SHOULD!!!!!!)

Super book. Worth every penny!

Comment:
I use this along with "The Fly Tier's Bible". The other books that I have I just don't seem to use very much by comparison. I particularly like the additional "variations" that they give for most patterns in this book. I find that often I like the "variation" better than the original pattern.
The only suggestion I would have for this book would be to have it available in a spiral version. Other fly pattern books often have this and it adds to the longevity of the binding.
