       Disappointing
    Comment:
I was very disappointed with this volume and I haven't yet decided to return it. For some reason, all the original diagrams and illustrations have been removed from the reprint -- even where they are referenced in the text.

There is no TOC or index and or any use of bold or highlighted typefaces to even determine the beginning or end of a topic.

The volume is poorly laid-out. For example, a 43-page listing of suggested materials at the end lists Title, Author and Publisher with no line breaks between the references.

In fact, there isn't a line break or paragraph heading in the entire volume. It looks very much like a computer printout from the pre-desktop publishing era, before WYSIWYG typography.

Please note, the original volume was NOT formatted this way, this was a very cheap reproduction of the original, unskillfully assembled with no effort at all going into the publishing process. This makes it useless as a reference book.

    Comment:
I'm rarely 100% pleased with a book I buy, most are enjoyable but the Dover edition of the 1911 Boy Scouts Handbook was great. I was never a Scout but thought the book could be interesting. I enjoy reading older books and survival manuals so I thought it was worth a shot, I wasn't let down. It's a good size, fitting easily in your hand, and quite thick, just over 400 pgs. It's filled with illustrations, photos and diagrams. The contents range form Scouting, the history of, badges and requirements ( reading this section made me realize that a 1911 boy scout was more of a man than I'll ever be) knots, woodcraft, survival, hunting, fishing, tracking, biology, science, sailing, hygiene, etiquette, first aid, how to build gadgets, kites , bird houses and countless other topics. This book is filled with information that should be helpful to all ages. The morality taught is commendable and the knowledge required of these Scouts should only increase one's appreciation of a great organization. (The Dover edition is recommended, I purchased it for less than $8.00, there is another more generic edition with no illustration on the cover for 4 times the price.)

A bit too new, in my opinion
    Comment:
I have several versions of these reprinted Scout Handbooks. I dislike this one, as the size is now similar to the current handbooks, and the covers are a glossy type of card stock. I would greatly appreciate them going back to the more traditional printing, where the book is smaller and thicker, with more of a weathered look to them.

Other than that, they are fine books, and it is interesting to see how things have changed over the last 100 years. I recommend that any Scout or former Scout get one.

They are my preferred gift to a new Eagle Scout.

The Boy Scouts Handbook provides a wealth of information on character building and self-sufficiency. We should all be mentored in preparedness.

Plus...it's a doorway back to a kinder time that bears remembering.
